4/7/2011 "spring training" with MODOT

Each spring, after a long winter of plowing snow and spreading salt, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) ‘switches gears’ and gets back into road maintenance mode. Part of this process includes sending workers to training workshops where successful pavement preservation techniques are revisited and new ideas for further improvement of results are explored. Coastal Energy is proud to partner with MODOT during these “spring training” sessions, and recently joined forces with them on April 7th, 2011 in Willow Springs for a Chip ‘N’ Seal seminar.

After attending a morning presentation during which road preservation ideas and techniques were shared, MODOT and Coastal employees joined forces to put classroom concepts into action. A stretch of worn roadway near the seminar site was selected, and the rest of the afternoon was spent practicing the latest chip ‘n’ seal techniques:

Selected roadway before chip ‘n’ seal refresh…
Applying Coastal Energy’s CRS-2P polymerized sealant…
The CRS-2P emulsion is applied at approximately 175°F…
Uniform sealcoat successfully applied…
MODOT’s chip spreader ready to go…
Limestone chips are uniformly applied to completely cover the emulsion sealcoat…
The positively charged (cationic), rapid-set emulsion bonds immediately to the limestone chips and sets within minutes…
Applying chips on a radius driveway requires special skill to ensure even coating at inner and outer edges…
Initial chip layer complete…
“Setting” the chips with a rubber roller ensures proper adhesion on flat as well as uneven surfaces…
Loaded with limestone, MODOT dump trucks help to set the chip coating into the emulsion…
The refreshed roadway, after restriping and 60 days' usage.  Compare to first picture! Refreshed Roadway
